Game Background:
From the start, Dave was told he was not the first Dave Strider to grace the land of pokemon. No one was all that surprised to see him, and for a few months he was the farthest along in their timeline. It made him feel different from the rest and he had to take time to adjust to the new world. He quickly discovered his sister had sleepless nights and they shared them together. On top of this Eridan Ampora claimed they had been a 'thing' yet he wasn't the Eridan that happened with.
By this point he was restless and so was Vriska, together they urged the group to travel. A tourney was announced while they were on the road and his friends chose to enter. Then Bro arrived, and Dave was suddenly faced with his departed brother. It felt surreal and they talked in little bits while Jake English, the alternate version of Jade's grandfather arrived. This is mentioned because Jake told Dave about his post-scratch counterpart and repeatedly said Dave himself was a hero. They argued but Jake would not be convinced otherwise.
Shortly there after, a ghost swarm hit and his sister Rose was possessed. The experience bothered Dave as it reminded him of the darker aspects of Pokemon and Rose reacted like a six year old boy that needed his big brother to protect him. Dave did just that, fending off Eridan who came to war with Rose and didn't find what he was after.
It scared him a little and he was relieved when she returned to normal. They proceeded to the tourney were all of his friends lost but it wasn't life threatening. The normality of it was pretty good and he got to learn a lot about Pokemon battles in the process. Roxy Lalonde and Jane Crocker appeared, two more alternates to the group as they were heading back to Goldenrod city. It was decided there would be a party for all of the December related birthdays. But by the time Dave and his friends arrived where the party would be held, Bro Strider was gone.
Dave attempted not to be bothered, but it had an impact. He grew quieter and a little withdrawn and Roxy left shortly after that. Rose and Dave talked about it as well as the events of the fourth wall which weren't that big for Dave until he found out their mother had been around. A few weeks later, some time before the twenty first of december, Rose's mother, Bro, and the alternate version of Bro, Dirk appeared. This time Dave would not be denied his meeting with his family.
He rushed out in the winter cold and met them before bringing them back with him. Ironically right after that the world tried to end at the hands of three legendaries; Regirock, RegiIce, Registeel. Nothing could turn them aside and they just kept getting bigger and destroying more things until...
....they shot light into the sky and vanished. They left behind eggs on Christmas that hatched shiny pokemon. The only other events that affected him after this was John falling into a coma and traveling with Jane Crocker. He promised to meet up with Bro Strider and Mom Lalonde, but, after a month of being in a small town decided to wait a little longer for Dirk, Jake, and Aradia to catch up before he parted ways with Jane.
Personality: Are you taking notes on how to be cool? Jesus get a pen already.
Dave is considered a cool kid, but that isn't all there is to him.
Time and time again Dave has shown a loyalty and commitment to tasks he deems important. Such as nagging his friend John to save his own life. A version of Dave came back to the present dedicated to the task and even sacrificed his humanity to ensure things didn’t go to hell. His important tasks are always for the greater good of ensuring his friends’ safety and well being. For them he’ll sacrifice himself over and over. When he had to be killed, he didn’t tell his friend Jade she would be the one to do it. He wanted to protect her from as much suffering as he could. And while he can be reluctant to do something, his friends’ happiness is fairly important to him. He wouldn’t have involved himself with the game in canon, if his friends hadn’t asked him to.
Dave is concerned for the safety and well being of most people he encounters when their lives are in danger. He chose to take up a suicide mission in place of someone else. And he found sleep difficult after he witnessed countless souls being destroyed. Even when faced with his own corpse, he was more worried about how other people would react to it. Dave went as far as stretching one day into three times as long trying to help other people out. He didn’t ignore the ghost Meenah asking him questions. Instead, he encouraged her to follow her plan to gather her friends together. While he doesn’t think he’s a hero, he possesses the heroic instinct.
But one of his flaws is his inability to see trouble coming until it’s too late to stop it. As a child this meant being bailed out by his brother. Within the game, his future self would step in to protect him. Over time, he’s become quite cynical because he’s forced to roll with the moment. He can’t do anything to stop what’s happening when a situation turns bad like finding a version of himself with his throat cut open. While managing time has honed his discipline, it also makes this flaw more apparent. Because no matter what he does to affect things, he’s just following what was set to happen. Any time he sought to change things a version of himself died, or he doomed a timeline. It reinforces his thoughts that there is nothing he can do to fix things.
And it doesn't help that he hides what he’s thinking while painting circles around his feelings with word dances and misdirection. However, all of his words have elements of truth buried within them as he never outright lies. He’s prone to deflecting any questions about his own feelings, or directing a conversation away from a subject that bothers him. Something his friends call him out on, but he doesn't always acknowledge. Nor does he state his worries and concerns without tying it to teasing or a joke. This doesn't make him any less of a truculent asshole when the mood strikes him to be. Which is often. But Dave isn't heartless. When he decides to counter-attack against words or physical attacks aimed his way, his pushing in those cases is aimed to defeat his opponent, but not hurt them. Such as when an alien named Tavros kept bothering him, Dave finally turned the tables on him. Because he was sick of being pestered. He doesn’t pursue anyone once they’ve retreated, because the fight is over. He can go right back to what he was previously doing.
Which brings us to another of his bad habits and character flaws, rather than face what’s bothering him, he’ll cover it up. Until he’s pressed on a subject, it is buried. A canon example of this is the fact is he like his friend Jade had always been ‘awake’ on another world known as Derse. He avoided being conscious of it by wearing shades and cramming his head full of music to drown everything out. When he bothered to face the situation, he immediately went snooping around his sister’s room as a distraction. And when he was told about how to get the power he wanted, via killing himself, he went back to managing time to avoid thinking about it . And not even an hour after his brother’s death he redirected Terezi’s attempt to comfort him into a talk about justice. He even simplified and downplayed his relationship with Bro then switched the subject.
Despite these flaws, Dave is pretty reliable. He has a level head, and sound judgement in the face of most things tossed his way. His sister Rose seems to always use him as a sounding board for her plans. The idea of a suicide mission was addressed to Dave before anyone else. In the beginning he can be skeptical of his surroundings, but he comes around in time. When asked to do something, he does it. Like when he manipulated a planet’s stock exchange, or making a map requested of him. It just might take him hours to get around doing what you asked. He did take awhile to get a copy of the game to save Rose’s life, but he rescued her just in time.
Very few people witness his transition from skeptic to believer, because it’s an internal process. To those that can see it, he goes through his upsets, frustrations, and his metaphors or commentary sometimes break down into capslock. Or shouting, like he did when his sister knocked him out to take up his suicide mission to the Green Sun. Originally, he’d resisted the idea of the mission. After his death and revival, Dave went along with the idea. But he didn’t handle the alien Equius’s poetry turning into beastiality porn with any grace and told him to shut up. Another alien tried to make him consider going into a threesome right before his sister reminded him he used to hit on her, much to his horror and exasperation. In both cases, he reacted poorly, first turning a talk into a physical fight and the later sputtering at the subject of accidental incest.
He hides his emotions because he’s quite insecure, having lived and been brought up in his successful brother’s shadow. He was raised to show no weaknesses, or emotions. When he discovered his brother’s corpse, he didn’t cry. But in the past he tried to emulate Bro Strider only to find he could never measure up. He had the cool but he could never fully ‘get’ Bro’s jokes. He even found them border lining into disturbing. Such as turning muppet babies into a rendition of a murder scene. By the time he realized that he wasn’t a carbon copy of his brother, fear of being inadequate and taking some statements about himself too literal had become a daily thing. It was only made worse being stuck in his own shadow and as a result of his insecurities and low sense of self-worth, Dave downplays his accomplishments.
To make sure everything turns out alright, the nosy knight will poke at everything and everyone around him once. He has to know what’s going on, and he will stick his nose into anything he feels is important. It tends to come off as joking or teasing because it is. His sense of humor is dry and can be scandalous on purpose or morbid, putting others off. Time and time again he’s accused of not seeing when someone is in trouble, not giving a shit about them, or when his friends need to talk. He shows he’s aware of the interests of his friends and their lives, often pestering them before they bother him, or when they’re asleep. When they need advice he’s been there to talk and even if he can’t help, he does try to.
And when left to his own devices, while his friends are elsewhere, Dave will entertain himself. He talks to himself and he’ll randomly start projects out of boredom. He created a version of tumblr for the afterlife, for example. Things like this show he is clever and is excellent at finding solutions . Usually in daring and reckless ways. His adaptability makes him deadly in a fight and one to turn to in cases of trouble. Yet, he has a strong temper, sometimes stupidly doing things because his cool is lost and he’s attempting to escape the situation. He jump kicked a sword because he wanted to snap it in half.
Now we can see the full scope of Dave Strider. He is a loyal, attentive friend who can come off a bit needy when he wants attention. He’s left pages and pages of messages to his friends when they’re offline. But, once he’s won over, there’s nearly nothing he won’t do to ensure the safety of others. Even if it means he’s dying in their place or keeping information to himself. Dave is honest with his opinions on serious matters and ribs playfully when the situation isn’t important to survival. He’s willing to get blown up to fix a situation and shoulders responsibility without considering how it will wear him down over time. And he’ll keep moving no matter how tired he is. He truly is the knight that he doesn't think he is.
Route related changes
Within Route, Dave has flourished. Without the doom of their canon situation hanging over his head and a lack of powers to consider, he's been allowed to be a kid again. As a result he's relaxed and opened up more. The peaceful setting forced him to relearn how to function in normal society. The wide array of social interactions have eased the horrors he carries in his nightmares even if he has not been cured of his insomnia.
His talents in art (how to make art shitty as hell) and music have been injected with new life due to no longer having only a certain amount of material to work with. Having pokemon gave Dave a bit of responsibility without the threat of death for him or the creatures. It's made him more serious in what he handles and how he does it. He has lives depending directly upon him without any fall back of time, he has to get it right the first time.
He's not afraid to ask for help. If he needs it, then he needs it. There's nothing to be ashamed of or claim he knows. It helps that Rose and John are so far ahead of him and yet there's no competition. He's been without his best friend for two years, just seeing him is pretty kick ass.
The setting has also encouraged Dave to check on other people and form friendships, getting to know people who share his interests without culture clashing. He can ramble on as casually as he pleases and does quite often. It also made him restless to the point he takes jobs and has turned his attentions to breeding and training the strongest dragons he can. It's partly because he missed Terezi and out of a personal interesting the mythical beasts.
His sister Rose he treats with more fondness. They're the only two from their canon point and he's come to lean on her for some support. When he needs her, she's there and he makes a point to do what he can to help her out. Compared to canon, they share something much closer to siblings who grew up together. He still ribs her and she still messes with his head in their verbal sparring and passive aggressive remark fests.
Due to the event where Yamasks possessed people he is more protective of Rose. It was alarming and he didn't like seeing her that afraid. She is one of the people he trusts the most and will go to her whenever he feels a bit lost.
Another important shift was his relationship with Bro Strider, his biological father. Instead of the constant strifing and messing with his head (well he still does that), he's been allowed time to talk to him. A lot of the tension between them from Dave's end has settled into joking and talking. Since his bro is behind pokemon wise, he sees no need to measure up to him combat wise and strives to be the best he can. This isn't to say Bro's influence over Dave is over. One mention of confusion over Dave only having one badge motivated him into action to do just that.
John Egbert and Dave Strider reunited which for him was a very big deal. He's missed the hell out of him but to John this was take five. The feeling wasn't the same at all. In fact he was quite settled in and was engaged to Rose, something Dave wasn't told, but, saw for himself. At first he felt like he didn't belong. Him with his nightmares and problems. But they were open to him, pulling him in and he's closer to John as a friend than he ever has been.
Now they can laugh and prank each other in person. It's vastly different to toss a face hugging pokemon at your best friend when you can see their reaction.
One drawback of route is the lack of weaponry. While Dave's first instinct is to whip out a sword, he's rusty with blades. Having only sticks to use, he turned to training his body instead. He can run harder and longer, kick harder but his ability with blades is not as good as it used to be. He is no less likely to expect trouble but, he's not used to that anymore either.
Abilities: In the game Sburb/Sgrub, all players that enter the Medium a realm of space constructed for the purpose of creating a new universe; all players are given a title. With these titles come powers and for Dave his title of Knight of Time was set to challenge him.
Dave is a sword wielder, and has been known to break his blades from harsh use. Fitting the knight profile, he defends others by managing time with the help of his Timetables (think turntables). He preserves the Alpha time stream, the correct one as he moves through what are called time loops.
As the time stream must be preserved, he can be several places in time at once. As many as thirteen Daves have been seen at once as he moved through the loops, completing them so he didn't have a counterpart that wound up doomed. A doomed counterpart was destined to die to keep time flowing right, often times warning against decisions that lead to their own failures. One wrong move and he’d see far too many of his own corpse.
Recently, Dave ascended, essentially becoming a God of Time. To do this the game provides the means, you die on your quest bed and rise up (provided you have a living dreamself). Godtier gives him greater control, speed, and power. Allowing him to no longer need the timetables to freeze people in timelocks or warp from one location to the next. The full range of abilities aren't yet revealed but he still has Fraymotifs, basically special skills that change his attacks (in combo with space you get Adaigo Redshift a time and space area effect attack).
Godtier players are given another specific ability that makes them difficult to kill. They will not die for good if the death wasn't justly given or heroic.
Dave is rolling in from Pokemon land, because of this he is further equipped with four pokemon (level 80 -Rapidash , 70 -dragonite, 50 - garchomp and one bagon egg.)

They say ignorance is bliss, but, Dave had long ago learned that was a flat out lie. It just meant when the fastball took your head off, you'd be known for the look of surprise on what was left of your face as it rolled away from your body. Being in the know isn't any better, because then you know what is waiting for you in the pitch blackness and how little of a chance you stood against it. There is no middle ground and certainly no way back. It's a little funny if you look at it from the outside...sometimes.
He had always expected the other shoe to drop when he'd been in the sunshine and happy land of pokemon. The sheer fall from pleasant times where his biggest worries were travel time and cash flow to how many ways he could die and his friends could die, wasn't as shocking for him as it was for the others. Being a time player in the game Sburb meant seeing yourself die over, and over, and over again, while being conscious of how you balanced the proverbial budget. One penny over the line and you could be the next one forming a dream bubble in the realm of terrible, screaming gods.
It didn't matter which one of you succeeded either, because the whole business of Alpha and Doomed lines only meant one survived and the rest did not. It was pointless and he did his best not to think about it. It saved his sanity to not consider the vast implications of what he dabbled in like some gambler at a Vegas casino.
Dave halted his thoughts as he came to yet another floor of the tower. His instincts had come back very quickly in the short amount of time he'd been trapped there. That familiar prickle of warning about attack, the sleeplessness because something was out there, all of it rushed back in. Some twisted part of him missed it. He stood on the stairs, before the new floor then slowly entered it, flipping his blade into his hand with the ease of practice. Though not as good as he used to swing it.
Which was embarrassing and wow he was stalling. Dave double checked his gear and strode up onto the new floor.
It was a dark cavern with shimmering blue light from above. The cave was bigger than the floor below and dark enough to make him frown as he reached for the pokeballs on his belt. He released a flame maned unicorn and her light bathed the area and cut back against the shadows. Dave smirked and motioned for her to come close to his side. She'd have a hard time in this terrain because of the slipply sands, man he should have thought of that. He looked up at her as she nudged his shoulder and then walked forward into the pale light. He moved to follow her with a sigh. "I get it, I get it. Keep calm and trot on."
He breathed with one hand on her back like a means of comfort. Something rushed out of the dark and he snapped his fingers. On command, the area lit up with the blazing circles of fire that ripped towards the ceiling high over their heads. That was one thing he could say about his current situation, no matter what horrors greeted them, he wasn't alone. And...
Red light mixed with the fire and rose like a tidal wave as he twisted to face the thing that had only been stunned by the first blast. Had he been anyone else, he'd have grinned. It felt good to have a sword in his hands again. It was like coming home again to a place he knew and was familiar with. He darted forward, crossing the sand by placing a stillness over with it with time and heard Lady B race after him. She lowered her head as he attacked from above. His sword bit deep and broke, but that wasn't an issue.
Dave rolled out of the way and reached into time, exploiting the seconds and reversing the damage to the steel. Time was on his side, again.
